Interactive Experience Design · Media Production

Imagery as design work. Not Thursday-afternoon sourcing.

On most projects, media is the last decision and the cheapest one: the layout is finished, somebody needs pictures, so a stock library gets opened. Media production means the opposite order. What the imagery has to communicate is decided alongside the layout, because it carries as much of the position as the words do.

Imagery treated as design work rather than as sourcing

On most projects, media is the last decision and the cheapest one. The layout is finished, somebody needs pictures, so a stock library gets opened on a Thursday afternoon. What arrives is technically fine and carries no argument. The same photographs circulate through an entire industry, so a page illustrated that way sits alongside every competitor drawing from the same shelf, and a visual index treats repeated imagery much as a web index treats duplicated text.

Art direction before anything gets made

The questions come before the shoot, the render or the generation. How subjects get framed, and what the lighting does. Whether people appear, and if so, whether they are performing or working. What the color grading says. Whether the treatment reads as documentary, as editorial, or as catalog. Those decisions produce a treatment that everything afterward is measured against, which is what makes a photograph, an illustration and a video read as coming from the same company rather than from three suppliers who never spoke.

Every medium, one direction

A treatment has to survive being printed, fabricated, projected and compressed. Color behaves one way on a display, another on a substrate. An image that carries at full width on a monitor may be read at thirty feet on a wall or at two inches on a packing slip. Video gets watched muted more often than not. So the direction is written for the range rather than for the primary channel, and the awkward cases are resolved deliberately rather than discovered by a supplier who then makes the call alone.

Where generation earns its place

Pagetrends generates imagery and says so plainly. Generation is good at producing a visual for a specific subject in a specific setting, rather than the nearest available approximation from a library. Volume, where a category needs forty consistent images instead of four, plus variation within a defined treatment. Filling a layout with real material during a build rather than after it.

What stays human is deciding what the imagery should feel like. Judging whether a result is right, or knowing when the generated version is worse than the photograph you already own. Art direction is judgement, and a system that hands that over produces work indistinguishable from everybody else’s. Generated work is produced against a stated treatment rather than against a blank prompt, which is the difference between a library that coheres and a folder of unrelated images that happen to share a subject.

Everything lands as a governed asset

Media that is not managed becomes media nobody can find. Every file enters the library as a first-class asset carrying alternative text, responsive sources, and one-click replacement referenced by identity rather than by file path. Swapping an image later updates every page carrying it. Provenance and license travel with the file: whether a visual was produced in-house, commissioned, generated or licensed, what the license permits, who supplied it and when. Budgets are enforced before packaging rather than discovered by a visitor. A hero video arriving at twenty megabytes gets stopped at the door.

Motion and sound belong to the same direction

Video and audio are media production rather than separate disciplines, and treating them separately is why so many brands sound like a different company than they look like. Pacing and edit rhythm carry character the way easing does on a screen. Music and any recurring sonic element are identity, though almost never governed. Voice, meaning who speaks and in what register, is frequently an accident of availability rather than a decision. One treatment covers all of it, or the channels drift apart.

Owned media compounds

Ordering matters, because the easiest file to reach for is nearly always the one everybody else has used. In-house and commissioned work sits at the top, while generated imagery produced for a page’s own subject sits alongside it. Stock is a fallback tier rather than a default. The reason runs beyond differentiation, because original imagery accumulates as an asset the business owns, gets referenced elsewhere, and keeps working long after the campaign it was made for ended.

Where media work connects

The values and patterns that a treatment resolves against are covered in design systems. Generation inside the build is covered in AI-assisted design. How motion timing carries character is covered in motion design.

How the engagement runs

Media work happens through screen shared sessions, with the treatment agreed before anything gets produced rather than assembled from whatever came back.

"If your photography could be swapped with a competitor’s and nobody would notice, that is the finding."

Could your photography be swapped with a competitor’s?

If nobody would notice, that is the finding. Media work happens through screen shared sessions, with the treatment agreed before anything gets produced rather than assembled from whatever came back.
