Model Context Protocol · Unconstrained Front End

Stop designing around the tool. Draw what you actually meant.

Every designer working inside a platform develops the same reflex: before an idea is fully formed, some part of the mind is already asking whether the builder can express it. Ideas that would need fighting for quietly stop being drawn. Removing the constraint removes the reflex.

Designing without checking what the tool allows

Every designer working inside a platform develops the same reflex. Before an idea is fully formed, some part of the mind is already asking whether the builder can express it, and ideas that would need fighting for quietly stop being drawn. That reflex costs more than any individual compromise, because it operates before anything reaches a page.

"The rounding does not begin during the build. It begins at the sketch."

Removing the constraint removes the reflex, so a designer starts considering ideas they had quietly stopped entertaining.

What a designer can reach for

The list is specific rather than aspirational, and each item is something builders routinely straighten out.

01

Asymmetry

An off-center composition with type overlapping an image, holding its balance across breakpoints rather than resolving to three equal columns at every width.

02

Real type systems

A seven-step scale with tracking adjusted per size, plus optical corrections that survive, rather than four steps and default spacing.

03

Scroll as a timeline

Sequencing tied to the reader’s own movement, which stops being a fantasy and becomes a decision anyone can make.

04

Canvas-driven and generative elements

Rendered visuals sitting inside a page as a considered part of the composition, never as an embedded object the layout has to work around.

05

Deliberate irregularity

A card row that breaks unevenly on tablet, since the imbalance was the point.

None of that arrived through modules built for the purpose. There are no modules at all, only a design and a build discipline that renders it.

Why the constraint existed

A builder has to make thousands of different sites possible, which means it must offer a vocabulary general enough to cover them. A general vocabulary cannot express any single site exactly, so every design gets approximated toward the nearest supported thing. The gap between drawn and shipped rarely comes from a failure of care or budget. It is arithmetic. Once a design is expressed directly rather than translated into somebody else’s vocabulary, the arithmetic changes.

Freedom with a discipline attached

Unconstrained does not mean unaccountable, and the constraints that remain are the ones worth keeping. Interactive states are expressed as real style rules rather than runtime behavior, so they survive maintenance and work for a keyboard user. Motion honours a stated reduced-motion preference. Stacking is declared explicitly. Contrast is computed with luminance math rather than judged by eye. Nothing conveys meaning that only exists inside a rendering context.

Those are design decisions rather than compliance chores. A page that behaves correctly for a keyboard user, a screen reader user, or somebody on a slow connection is simply a better designed page, and building it that way from the start costs a fraction of retrofitting it later.

The other half of the freedom

Design freedom is worth very little if the result cannot be maintained. The great failure of most export-your-design approaches is that the export is a one-way door, and the moment a headline needs changing you are back in code. The editing side is covered in familiar CMS backend, and the two together are the whole proposition. Neither one alone is worth much.

Where design freedom connects

The classification that makes an arbitrary design expressible is covered in AI design import, the contract describing its regions is covered in composer blueprints, and the interactive direction this opens is covered in interactive experiences under design.

How the engagement runs

Design work happens through screen shared working sessions, and the most useful starting point is usually a design somebody already abandoned for being impractical. If your designers have learned to draw what the platform will accept, you are paying for talent you are not receiving.
