Organic Search Marketing · Performance Analytics

Measuring what the other eight produce. Evidence, not faith.

A term was claimed, a cluster was built, a page was rewritten, and something changed or it did not. Without measurement those arguments stay opinions, and an agency running on them eventually asks a client to keep paying on faith.

Organic work resists clean attribution

Positions move for reasons nobody outside the search companies controls, results reshuffle in weeks, and the interval between doing the work and seeing the outcome is long enough for a dozen other things to change. Any measurement approach that pretends otherwise is selling certainty rather than evidence.

Two layers, measuring different things

01

On the page, before anything is published

A draft is graded against the brief that specified it, on concept coverage, structure, placement and readability, with an alignment score against the content currently holding the leading positions. The grade arrives before the page has met a single visitor, which is the only way to separate work done properly from work the market happened to reward. That grade is the honest half of the picture, because it measures execution, which is inside our control.

02

Off the page, after publication

Search Console shows what queries a site surfaces for, at what position, and how that moves. Watching clusters rather than individual keywords is the useful reading. One phrase shifting is noise. A whole related group shifting together signals that the topic has been understood differently. Search Console measures outcome, which is not inside anybody's control, and it should be reported that way.

What movement actually looks like

Take a concrete execution pass on an established site: headings added to pages that had none, thin content expanded, internal links repaired. That produces movement in clusters rather than in single positions. A group of terms sitting deep in the results moves up together. A group already closer to the surface shifts less, having less room to travel. The reading that matters is the direction of a cluster over weeks, not the position of one term on one day. Individual positions vary between checks for reasons that have nothing to do with anything you did.

The reporting problem

A great deal of what gets sent to clients is selected to flatter. Rankings on terms nobody searches. Impressions counted as if they were interest. Traffic growth that arrived from a source unrelated to the work. Any of it can fill a monthly report while a client's actual business stays exactly where it was.

We report against what was agreed beforehand. A stated objective for a piece of work, a measurement that speaks to it, and an honest account when the number did not move. A failure is worth knowing about faster than a success, because failure is the finding that changes what happens next.

There is also a category of success that conventional reporting registers as failure. Being cited in a generated answer for a query that no longer produces clicks will show as flat sessions. Counting sessions on a query that has stopped producing them reports a loss on work that is landing.

Measurement feeding the method

Findings that prove out do not stay on the account that produced them. Work that measurably improves position, conversion or authority gets promoted into the practice itself, so a technique validated in one topic world becomes available in the next. Promotion is how a method gets better rather than merely older, and it is why we can start faster in an industry we have not worked in before.

The rule governing it is strict. Proven findings travel. Client identity does not, ever. A finding carries the full research body and nothing that identifies whose account established it.

What is not worth measuring

Vanity positions on terms with no buying intent. Aggregate traffic without any question of what it did. Any metric a competitor could raise without their business getting better. Daily rank checking, which measures variance rather than progress and produces anxious decisions.

"Anything you would not change a decision over is not worth putting in a report."

Where measurement work connects

The grading layer sits inside AI-crafted context, the structural work being measured is covered in search engine compliance and topic clusters, and the conversion question is covered in visitor optimization.

Has your reporting ever surprised you?

If it has never told you something you did not want to hear, it is not measuring anything. Measurement is set up at the start rather than assembled at the end. Sessions are screen shared and start within days.
